Jitse zelf had er totaal geen probleem mee, want hij kon alles kwijt over zijn favoriete onderwerp: de kakapo.
Hier is de tekst van zijn spreekbeurt, in kleur, want dat vond Jitse mooi:
Introduction
Did you know that the Kakapo is the strangest parrot in the world?
Special
It is very special. It looks like no other parrot, except the Kea. It has a very different beak from other parrots. It has its nostrils on its beak. It has whiskers like a cat and it cannot fly.
Male Kakapo make a "Lek". All the males gather and make funny noises and dance a little bit in circles they made in the grass. They have like 4 circles with little tracks in between. They do this to attract females.
They breed only once every 2-4 years, because they like Rimu fruit, and this tree does not give enough fruits every year. In the Rimu is some kind of stuff that makes the Kakapo lay eggs. Schientist are busy to find out what this stuff is.
Rare
Thirty years ago there were only twenty left. They only live in New Zealand on Codfish island were scientists study and help them. Now there are about 100 Kakapo in the whole world.
Danger
To protect themself from being eaten the Kakapo use camouflage. They have a nice green coat and it is VERY difficult to see them.
But the Kakapo have a little problem, their smell is very strong, so lots of animals like stoats, dogs cats and rats can smell them, and then eat them. These animals did not used to live here. They came with the European settlers.
Other interesting facts
They eat fruit and big insects. Their eggs are smaller then a chicken egg, but an adult Kakapo is as big as a two year old human baby!
In the 1800-eds there were a lot of Kakapo and some people had Kakapo as pets. Two hundred years later they thought they had all gone. But the people were wrong.
Conclusion
They need our help!
Tot slot hebben we nog een filmpje gemaakt waarin Jitse iedereens hulp vraagt om de kakapo te redden. Donaties kunnen naar ons toe; die geven we dan door aan Jitse, en dan zorgen we dat het bij de kakapo komt.
