When I got into kitesurfing I didnt really want to spend a whole lot of money so I bought the cheapest stuff I could find. I managed to find an awesome deal on markplaats (dutch ebay) wich included 3 kites and a board for only 100 euros. I thought it was to good to be true and it turned out it was.
All 3 kites where C style wich are not suited for beginners at all. And as an extra bonus 2 leaked. So the board was the only usefull thing I got out of the bargain. But considering that most secondhand kiteboards are still valued at arround 200-300 euros its still a pretty good bargain.
And since a plank with some footholds attached also works just fine as shown by the world champion kevin langeree in this video https://youtu.be/z6kOVDQt-ZU I was sure this would suffice
And I was right I learned kitesurfing on it and it managed to do everything I needed of it.
But now im a year later and feel a bit stuck in my progress. I still cant do any tricks or real jumps and most of my time is spent trying to get far enough upwind so that its safe to actually practice these tricks. I always thought it was just my fault since all these other kitesurfers do mange to go upwind pretty easily.
But recently I keep hearing from other kitesurfers how old my board is and that its a miracle I can get upwind with it due to it being way less broad than the more modern ones. One guy even said that it was a shame that I had such a nice boardbag (30 euros) for such a shitty board.
But buying a new secondhand board also seems like such a risk because what if its not the board at all but just me?
So today I had the plan to go out to the beach and ask random kitesurfers if I could borrow their expensive board to test it out (new boards can easily be around 1000 euros)
I was quite nervous because I though they would say no for sure I mean they dont know me, there are large waves wich can easlily crash into you and seperate you from their board. Or the board might smash into the rocky beach. Plus they are there to kitesurf themselves so most would probabally be using their boards themselves so they wouldnt want to lend it to me.
On the other hand if someone came up to me and asked if they could borrow my board for a few minutes I would say yess for sure. But well then my board isnt worth 1000 euros
So after pumping up I just decided to go for it and walked up to a guy and asked if I could use his board for a few minutes.
He said no, and then pulled a gun and shot me.
You dont believe me?
Well yes maybe your right, but if I told the true story it wouldnt be entertaining enough since he said yes without hesitation.
So there I was with a fancy board and when I went Into the water I could directly feel the diffrence. This board was a lot more agile, steering was way easyer and jumping over waves without crashing into them was also really enjoyable. There was only one downside, I kept sinking into the water. At first I thought this was caused by the low windspeeds but later when I switched back to my old board it was really easy to float again. This is because its almost 2 times longer and thus floats better duhh.
So for now Ill keep my trusty old relic but when theres a bit more wind I might ask some other kitesurfer if I can borrow their board for a bit. But first I will make sure they dont have a gun with them.
